What happened
Anonymous entry was allowed for the first time, with guests identified only by a handle on a paper badge. Terry Pratchett's badge read 'Gaspode'. The best-connected attendee, 'Rex_Wien', gave three talks and was offered a committee seat. It emerged the next year that Rex was a dog, which the committee maintains it knew all along.
