What happened

Every guest got a potato and a bag of face parts cut from old committee portraits. Every potato came out looking slightly like Dr. Kranzl, which nobody could explain. The best 200 were exhibited in rows. Groucho Marx, in town on tour, moved his moustache onto the winning potato and declared it an improvement.

Elsewhere in 1952

Mr. Potato Head goes on sale, a kit of plastic face parts for real potatoes and the first toy advertised on television.
